The Good Cemetery Guide The Good Cemetery Guide by Consuelo Roland (Double Storey)
Anthony Loxton is a reluctant third generation funeral director by day. He lives, eats and sleeps death but this somber character lies in direct contrast to his alter ego. Tony the fox is a Bob Dylan type guitarist who hits the bars of Kalk bay at night.
There seems to be no escape from the burden of the family business. But when Tony’s one night stand- Lily turns up in a body bag, Anthony finds himself crossing the fine line of getting involved personally and breaking the rule - business is business. The contrast of these different sides to Anthony provides an insightful and humorous tone to Roland’s first novel.
A whirlwind journey of self-discovery begins. The backdrop of Kalk Bay proves to be a wonderful setting for this off-the-wall story and Roland’s descriptions of the sea-side town are crisp. Roland’s Spanish background adds a freshness to the story with the many references made to Mexico.
This book is a fast-paced, witty, enjoyable read. I look forward to Roland’s next novel
